Putting God First

There are two things that have been on my mind for a while now.
They are very short and simple

A lot of times, when we face situations – good or bad – we don’t turn to God. At least not first. We’ll first bitch about our problems, or talk about our celebrations to people.

I’m very guilty of this. Whenever anything happens to me, the first 2 people that hear about it are Gbemisoke and Ibukun. Then God.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have people to confide in but God should be number one.

A lot of us only turn/pray to God on two occasions. The first is when bad things happen. When nothing seems to be going right. That’s when you’ll see us. Going to church. Going to pastor. Going for vigils. Staying up all night to pray. The second is when good things are happening. We were promoted at work. We passed an exam etc etc. We will tell everybody about our testimony. Do thanksgiving ceremony. Tell our pastors. Tell everybody we can think of.

But what of the times in between bad and good times. When things aren’t hot or cold. When things are just lukewarm. We wouldn’t always be up and down. There’ll be plateaus. What do we do in our (spiritual) plateaus. We have to hold on to God every time.
Pray without ceasing. Pray in all seasons. Pray. Pray. Pray. Every time. Every season. Every day. Without stopping.

Parents Charged With Murder in Death of Infant

So yesterday, I read on TheStir.com and then on CNN about a couple (Herbert and Catherine Shaible) that have been charged with third degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy, and, endangering the welfare of a child, after the death of their child.

Apparently, the baby (named Brandon) died on April from dehydration and bacterial pneumonia. His death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office because when they noticed symptoms of illness, they began to pray for him instead of seeking medical help

In 2009, their 2-year-old son Kent died of bacterial pneumonia as they prayed over him rather than calling on a doctor. They were convicted of involuntary manslaughter but given a 10 year probation. One condition of their probation was a requirement that they seek medical attention and follow medical advice if any of their children were to get sick in the future.

Their former prosecutor (Joanne Pescatore) stated that the circumstances of that case were “eerily similar” to this one. She also said that she argued for a prison sentence in the earlier case but the judge didn’t feel it was appropriate.
The Shaibles have at least two other children who were taken into the custody of Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services following the death of Brandon in April.

This is a very interesting something. I believe in the power of prayer but I also believe that God created us with brains and created people to help us.

It reminds me of a joke/story about a guy who was drowning. A boat came to pick him up and he said: “No, God is going to save me”. Another boat came and he told the people in it the same thing. A lifeguard came and he told the lifeguard the same thing. A while later, he died and went to heaven and he told God: “I had faith in You to save me and You didn’t.” And God replied: “I sent you two boats and a lifeguard. What else did you want me to do.”

Jesus never said anything about not using doctors. He even referred to doctors in some of his parables. Luke, a disciple and writer of one of the gospels, was a doctor and I don’t think it was because he had a PhD.

Even if you are a Muslim, it’s in the Quran that you should seek medical help when necessary.

So what do you think about the charges. Is murder too much or is it justified seeing as this is the second child. Are they extremists?

Religion vs Way of Life

disclaimer: if you are easily offended by religious stuff, close this page and don’t continue reading. This is just my opinion and if you continue reading and you vex, go and hug transformer. Oh and this post is a tad log so bear with me. 😀

Do you have a religion or a way of life? At the end of this post, I hope you’ll be able to answer this question. I was going through Linda Ikeji’s blog and i saw a comment. This is an excerpt: ‘muslims and christians don’t worship the same God. Muslims worship the devil’
I didn’t and i haven’t wanted to post anything religious on this blog but this?… This is ignorance in it’s highest form. Religious conflict is one of nigeria’s greatest problems. People also say Islam is a ‘voilent’ religion. In the Qu’ran, it says: “He who kills a non-Muslim living amongst Muslims will never smell the fragrance of paradise”.

Islam means peace. This is a comprehensive explanation: Islam is derived from the word ‘Aslam’ and the Arabic root “salema” that means peace, purity, submission and obedience. This is an excerpt from the Qu’ran: “We believe in ALLAH and that which has been revealed to us, and that which was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and in that which was given to Moses and Jesus and other Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them and to HIM we submit.”

Who is Allah?: Allah is the proper name for Almighty God,
and is often translated merely as “God”. It is important to note that “Allah” is the same word that Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews use for God. If you pick up an Arabic Bible, you will see the word “Allah” being used where “God” is used in English. This is because “Allah” is the only word in the Arabic language equivalent to the English word “God” with a capital “G” (Islam started in the Arab world hence the use of the Arabic Language)

Muslims are expected to tolerate other religions. It is in the Qu’ran that: God forbids you not, with regards to those who fight you not for [your] faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them; for God loveth those who are just.

Muslims do believe that there is Jesus and await His second coming. They consider him one of the greatest of God’s messengers to mankind. The Quran confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Quran is entitled ‘Mary’), and Mary is considered the purest woman in all creation. The birth of Jesus is in the Qu’ran:
‘Behold!’ the Angel said, ‘God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and shall be of the righteous.’
She said: ‘O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said: ‘Even so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, “Be!” and it is.’

On the issue of more than one wife, there is a clause (which many people overlook). Circumstances may warrant the taking of another wife but the right is granted, according to the Qu’ran, only on condition that the husband is scrupulously fair.

I come from a muslim home and i attend a christian school where we are preached to about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit at any opportunity. So, I can say that I have a great understanding of both religions and i know what I’m talking about. Most people forget the essence of their faiths and start being religious and then they mix up the rules. Somewhere along the way, many people stop following God and start following their religious leaders. Someone tweeted (although not the exact words): on judgement day, we aren’t going to stand in a single file behind our pastors’. People should start trying to understand the concepts that a religion entails before saying things about the religion. You need to be informed. Don’t just do/say things because your pastor/alfa/imam or whatever said so. Know your religion. Know who you are. If we aren’t careful, we may end up with The Guyana Tragedy. Ignorance is why someone said we will face the ‘rat’ of God if we continue ‘harassing’ Oyedepo for slapping the girl that said she is a witch for Jesus. Also, are you prejudiced against other religions? You believe that anybody that practices a religion other than yours is a ……

Now to Boko Haram. To say that Boko Haram is an Islamic group is lies because muslims are even more affected by their activities. Most of the places where they attack are occupied by muslims. Also, they aren’t against western education. If they are, why are they using products of western education. I think these people are for the government if not why would they not do anything about boko haram and why would the president say it is a phase we have to live out.

Also when i was doing this, i saw this tweet: ‘@Tweet_Babalawo: If ur muslim i automatically hate u Especialy if ur hausa I detest u May maggot come out ur body[sic] while ur alive.‘ You see. Ignorance.

I’m stuck with the story I’m writing but i’ll try to be done by New Year.

Have a lovely day 🙂
